There are many things about NZ that are fascinating and intriguing. One is the many different varieties of birds and plants that I have seen and/or heard. Many I am unfamiliar with. I suspect that we have some in the US, just not in Minnesota. One tree that fits that category is a lemon tree just off our deck. It has been a pleasure to look at and enjoy. I have never picked a fresh lemon before until now.

Hey Scott,
Thanks for the Birthday Wishes!! Vicki and I played hooky and spent the day in Santa Barbara. It was a beautiful 74 degree day without a cloud in the sky. We had lunch at a restaurant right on the ocean. It was a very nice day.
So, what do the natives like to eat and drink in NZ?

The cuisine scene is hard to decipher. It seems like a pretty good dose of English tradition. Unfortunately, the English aren't known for their culinary skills. This is a huge wine region, particularly whites. The sauvignon blancs are world class. Beer seems to be a favorite of the younger crowd (no surprise there). Interestingly, instant coffee is the thing. The shelves at the grocery store are mainly instant coffee rather than brew your own. I bought a coffee maker; I couldn't give in.
I will say, however, that I have been invited over to my friends John and Jane Haynes' house many times for meals while in Nelson. They are originally from the UK, and have provided gourmet food experiences the likes of which I have not seen before. Jane is quite a cook and causes me to wonder about the bad reputation the British have for their food.
